My work between photography, architecture and sculpture investigatesthemes of vulnerability, obsolescence and acceptance of change. I am interested in the temporary and unplanned shapes of buildings. I see the process of ageing as a disrupting opportunity to question the idealised architectural form. The alteration of the architectural body can trigger the contemporary present and imagine possible futures. Through my practice, I have developed and explored, both visually and conceptually, the notion of the ‘hypothetical configuration’ - which I understand as a variation of or deviation away from any expectation that builds up around a certain material or form. Structures are represented as transient bodies in an uncertain state between life and death, retaining their fundamental material characteristics while the function is compromised. I have a strong interest in the domestic scale of structures and the repurposing of architecture, often seeking ways of understanding the hidden potential of elements of the architectural body. In my recent work , Hypothetical Structures, found ordinary parts of architectural structures appear isolated, out of context, often in a subdued atmosphere, suggesting the layering of time. I am inspired by the curiosity of knowing how much past lies under the skin of structures. Through the act of removing parts from transient sites, I re-arrange these structures wondering what new meaning they will have in the present and how less vulnerable they have become as independent sculptures. These structures are captured in a limbo of uncertainty, not necessarily a negative state. Although architecture strives to fulfil pre-determined purposes, it often assumes infinite configurations.
